Title: THE EFFICIENCY OF BED-TIME ORAL CLEANING METHODS ON ORAL BACTERIAL COUNT ANALYZED USING qPCR METHOD



Abstract


I wanted to see which cleaning method (brushing, brushing + tongue cleaning, chlorhexidine mouthwash, neem twig rubbing, finger rubbing + water swishing, oil pulling, commercial local South Indian mouthwash, and my own homemade mouthwash) was the best. I also wanted to give Awareness on Bed-Time Oral Cleaning because a lot of bacteria grow when we are sleeping because the saliva is not flushing.

I used 93 human subjects and divided them into different groups where each group did a certain cleaning method by eating raw cane sugar cubes and not cleaning for 2 days and cleaning for 2 days. Then they repeated the procedure. I then did DNA Extraction and the samples were put in the PCR machine.

From my 93 human subjects, I got 744 saliva data and 1,488 qPCR reactions were done. I calculated the "p-value" and did Annova Single Factor Analysis. The qPCR analysis showed that upon Oral Cleaning, there was a decrease in the bacterial count for all of Brushing + Tongue Cleaning and Hand Rubbing + Water Swishing. Out of the 3 best, the easiest and most convenient way of cleaning is the simple Finer Rubbing + Water Swishing.


Awareness Given Through This Research

Dental Awareness Camp 2015 - at a Middle School in a remote village in South India. This camp brought awareness of the importance of oral cleaning & bedtime brushing, and motivated them to maintain good oral hygiene.
